Your coding assistants can now text each other — Claude Code sessions started talking on Friday
Anthropic shipped cross-session messaging in Claude Code v2.1.224 on August 7. Two terminal sessions running on the same machine can now pass notes: one discovers the other with a tool called ListAgents, then delivers plain text with SendMessage. Only text crosses — never conversation history, files or permissions — and on the same machine the message travels over a per-session Unix socket that never touches Anthropic's servers. Messages to your sessions on another machine or on the web go through Anthropic and are reply-only: a session there can answer, but cannot start the exchange. The guardrails are explicit. A message from another session cannot approve a permission prompt on your behalf, cannot change settings or project configuration, and any slash command inside it arrives as inert text rather than running. Repeated and identical messages are throttled so two sessions cannot lock into a loop. The feature is macOS and Linux only, with no Windows support.
Why it mattersDevelopers have been running three or four AI sessions at once for a year now, and until Friday the wiring between them was a human copy-pasting: this one changed the database schema, go tell the other one before it builds on the old column. Removing that step is small, and it is also the point at which parallel assistants start behaving like a team rather than a set of tabs. What makes it worth watching is less the convenience than the design around it: text only, no permission inheritance, loop throttling, local socket by default. Those are the questions every multi-agent setup has to answer, and they are the ones that determine whether a room full of agents is useful or merely loud.
