Washington gave teachers a red light list for using AI.

Washington gave teachers a red light list for using AI.

The District of Columbia education office published a model AI policy for school staff on 1 September. It sorts tasks into red, yellow and green, and bans AI from discipline and special education eligibility. Lesson planning sits in green, while grading is yellow and needs close human review.

Why it mattersOnly 45 percent of the district's schools had any staff AI rule in February. A short list of forbidden uses is easier to follow than a long ethics document.
