Fake reporters placed about 100 AI articles in real US outlets.
OpenAI said on Thursday it banned Iranian accounts that used ChatGPT to pitch stories to American editors. Seven invented journalists with AI-made portraits placed about 100 pieces, including in CounterPunch and LA Progressive. OpenAI calls it a commercial operation for hire, and it already blocks ChatGPT inside Iran.
Why it mattersThe pieces carried bylines that looked local, in outlets a reader could reasonably trust. Fluent English is no longer evidence that a writer is who the byline claims.
