From this term, every first-year at Singapore's largest university takes a compulsory AI course

The National University of Singapore announced on 11 August that a module called Applied Generative AI: From Prompting to Evaluation will be compulsory for all first-year undergraduates from academic year 2026/27, with further AI teaching folded into the common curricula of the College of Humanities and Sciences, the College of Design and Engineering, the business school and healthcare professional education. From 31 August, every NUS student, academic and staff member also gets free access to ChatGPT Edu, a university-administered version with higher message limits in which conversations and data inside the NUS workspace are not used to train OpenAI's models. The arrangement is a formal collaboration with OpenAI covering teaching, research and university administration. NUS enrols roughly 40,000 students.

Why it mattersMost universities have spent two years writing rules about what students may not do with these tools. This is the other approach: teach the thing, on the record, to everyone, and give the whole campus a licensed version instead of pretending nobody is using one. The half worth watching is the second half. An institution-wide licence answers the 'they're using it anyway' problem by moving usage somewhere the university can see and govern — and in doing so ties a national university's daily teaching to one American vendor's pricing and product decisions. If your school or child's school is weighing something similar, that trade is the actual decision.
