OpenAI asked California to regulate its own teen chatbots.

OpenAI asked California to regulate its own teen chatbots.

California lawmakers passed Adam's Law on 31 August, and OpenAI publicly urged Governor Gavin Newsom to sign it. The bill forces age checks, parental controls and outside audits on chatbots that teenagers treat as companions. Newsom has until 30 September to decide, and the rules would start on 1 July 2027.

Why it mattersIf your teenager uses ChatGPT, age checks and parent controls could reach them by summer 2027. OpenAI says nearly 90 percent of teens use ChatGPT weekly, so the rules reach a lot of homework.
