Google will back African AI teams in Accra — with access to Gemini and Veo before release
Applications are open for the first Google Africa Applied AI Lab, based at the Accra AI Community Centre in Ghana, and close on August 31, 2026. It is for founders and researchers on the continent building AI products for African problems, across five areas: the future of work, knowledge, software development, creativity and entertainment. Selected teams get early access to Google DeepMind models — including Gemini, Gemma and Veo — to test commercial uses before general release, plus technical mentorship from Google Research and go-to-market support from Google teams and venture partners. Notifications begin in September, and the co-development period runs from mid-September to early December. Applying is free.
Why it mattersEarly access to models is normally reserved for large partners, and it is the difference between building on what everyone already has and building on what nobody has yet. For a researcher or founder in Accra, Lagos or Nairobi, this is one of the few routes to the same starting line as a Bay Area team — and the work stays aimed at problems on the continent rather than at whatever Silicon Valley finds interesting.
