Researchers at Carnegie Mellon, MIT and Cornell had 1,507 believers argue two violent news events with Gemini. Belief fell further than for people handed a sourced fact sheet or an unrelated chat. The preprint reports the effect lasted two months and reached claims the chat never mentioned.

Why it mattersDebunking usually fails because it talks at people instead of answering their own reason for doubting. The same method could push belief the other way, a risk the authors flag themselves.
