Anthropic signs a $10 billion compute deal with a week-old startup — on Norwegian hydropower

Anthropic has struck a six-year, $10 billion contract with Volta Infra, a brand-new Nvidia-backed cloud startup, to run AI workloads at Bitdeer's Tydal data center in Norway, Bloomberg reported Tuesday. The purpose-built site runs entirely on hydropower and is planned for 133 megawatts of gross capacity dedicated to Anthropic, stocked with Dell hardware and Nvidia's newest Vera Rubin chips, delivered in two phases from the end of 2026. A roughly $1.3 billion credit backstop arranged by J.P. Morgan supports the financing.

Why it mattersOne day after reports that Google built a $200 billion financing machine for Anthropic's chips, this shows how fast the compute land-grab is spreading beyond the big clouds: a startup only days old can land a $10 billion anchor tenant if it controls power and chips. The choice of Norwegian hydropower also signals that clean, cheap energy — not just GPUs — is becoming the scarce resource AI labs compete for.
