Mathematicians used AI to close the last gap in a 40-year hunt.
Scientific American reported on Tuesday that six mathematicians had solved M23, the last open case among 26 special symmetry groups. AI agents sifted through symmetry combinations and produced approximate equations for seven candidate surfaces. The mathematicians turned those approximations into exact polynomials, and say no part of the paper was written by AI.
