OpenAI opened the engine behind Codex to any developer.

OpenAI opened the engine behind Codex to any developer.

OpenAI put its Agents API into public beta on Thursday, opening the harness that runs Codex. One session can write files, run code, search the web and hand work to three subagents at once. There is no extra fee, but the sessions run only in the United States for now.

Why it mattersBuilding a working agent used to mean writing all the plumbing yourself. Now the hard part ships as a service, so far more apps will act on your behalf.
