The company that takes a cut of your card payment just bought the toll booth every AI request passes through — for more than $7 billion

Bloomberg reported on 16 August that Stripe has finalised an agreement to buy OpenRouter for more than $7 billion. OpenRouter is an AI gateway: one API key and one bill that reach more than 400 models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, DeepSeek and others, so a developer can switch provider on price, speed or availability without rewriting anything. It says it has roughly 8 million users. The price is the striking part — OpenRouter raised a $113 million Series B in May 2026 from Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures and Alphabet's CapitalG at a $1.3 billion valuation, so this is more than five times that number in about three months. The Wall Street Journal had reported talks a month ago. Stripe has not confirmed the deal: a spokesperson told TechCrunch the company does not comment on rumours or speculation, and OpenRouter has said nothing publicly. Its chief executive, Alex Atallah, has previously described the company as 'the Stripe for AI' because it gives customers one access point and keeps them from being locked in.

Why it mattersPayments and model access turn out to be the same shape of business: sit between thousands of buyers and a handful of suppliers, take a small percentage, and become impossible to remove. Stripe already occupies that position for money; this buys the equivalent position for AI inference. The valuation jump is also a signal worth reading — the market is paying more for the layer that routes between models than for many of the models themselves, which is what you would expect once models start to look interchangeable. For developers, the practical question is whether a neutral switchboard stays neutral after a payments giant owns it.
