A free year of Google's paid AI plan is open to college students in 140-odd countries — and it has to be claimed by 31 December
Google announced on 19 August that college students can claim twelve months of its paid AI subscription at no cost. In the United States the offer is Google AI Pro, normally $19.99 a month, which raises Gemini usage limits fourfold and adds Gemini Spark, Gemini inside Gmail and Docs, 5 TB of storage and Google Health Premium. Students outside the United States get Google AI Plus free for a year across more than 140 markets, which includes Gemini Omni, double the usage limits and 400 GB of storage. Who can apply: enrolled college students, with eligibility verified through SheerID at sign-up. What it costs: nothing for twelve months, but a valid payment method is required to register, and the plan renews at the paid price unless cancelled. The deadline to redeem is 31 December 2026, and the free year runs from the day you claim it, not from the announcement. Google also opened a Student Hub at gemini.google.com/students with study notebooks, flashcards, practice quizzes, 3D visualisations and Deep Research. It is live on personal accounts now; school-issued accounts follow in the coming weeks.
Why it mattersFor a student in one of the 140-plus markets on the Plus tier, this removes the constraint that shapes how most people actually use these tools — running out. Free tiers ration long documents, long conversations and the slower reasoning modes, which are precisely what a dissertation or a problem set needs. Twelve months without that ceiling is a materially different product. The two conditions worth reading before you sign are the payment method and the verification. The card is not charged during the free year, but the subscription is a real subscription: it renews at $19.99 or the local equivalent unless cancelled, and the calendar reminder for that is on you. SheerID ties the account to a verified student record. Neither is buried, but neither is on the poster either. If you are eligible, the cost of claiming now and cancelling later is a diary entry.
