Gemini crossed a billion monthly users — and most of them are not typing

Sundar Pichai said on 11 August that the Gemini app has passed one billion monthly active users, making it the fourteenth Google product to reach that scale and, the company says, the fastest-growing in its 28-year history. The figure covers only the standalone app and web interface; people who meet Gemini through AI Overviews in Search, or inside Gmail and Docs, are not counted. The app was at 400 million in May 2025, 900 million at I/O in May, and 950 million at the July earnings call, so the last 50 million arrived in under a month. Google added that 63% of active users speak to the app rather than type, that one in five Gemini Live sessions includes camera or screen sharing, and that it produces more than 150 million images a day. iOS alone is past 100 million users. ChatGPT reached a billion in June. Google did not disclose how many of these users pay.

Why it mattersTwo assistants now have a billion users each, roughly a quarter of everyone online, which settles the question of whether this was a niche. The number worth carrying away is 63%: for most people using the largest AI product at Google, the interface is not a text box but a conversation, which is a different product with different failure modes — you cannot skim a spoken answer for the bit that looks wrong. And note what was left out. A billion users tells you nothing about revenue, and Google chose not to say.
