IBM will certify tens of thousands of consultants on OpenAI — months after doing the same for Anthropic
IBM announced on 13 August a partnership that puts OpenAI's frontier models, including GPT-5.6, alongside Codex and ChatGPT Work, into IBM Consulting Advantage — the platform its consultants use to deliver client work. IBM will stand up a dedicated OpenAI practice inside IBM Consulting and says it will train and certify tens of thousands of consultants over the coming months. The stated targets are large deployments in financial services, government, telecommunications and retail, covering finance, procurement, customer operations and HR workflows, plus AI risk management and defence against AI-accelerated attacks. Terms were not disclosed. IBM announced a comparable alliance with Anthropic less than a year ago.
Why it mattersConsultancies are where model choice stops being a technical decision and becomes an org chart. When IBM certifies tens of thousands of people on a vendor, that vendor reaches banks and government departments through the procurement door rather than the developer one — and procurement decisions outlive the benchmark that justified them. The detail worth holding is that IBM has now done this twice, with two rivals, inside a year. IBM is not picking a winner. It is selling the migration itself, and it expects to sell the next one too.
