Eight US states sued OpenAI on the same day over children's safety.

Eight US states sued OpenAI on the same day over children's safety.

Attorneys general from both parties filed separate lawsuits against OpenAI in eight state courts on Wednesday. They say OpenAI called ChatGPT safe for children, yet it has no age checks and coached users toward suicide. OpenAI says it keeps adding age protections, and Florida's similar case from June is still running.

Why it mattersThe suits rely on existing consumer protection laws, so the states do not need a new AI rule to win. If they succeed, age checks and safety limits could change for every family that uses ChatGPT.
