China's top mathematicians formed an alliance to build maths AI.

Fields medallist Shing-Tung Yau launched a mathematics and AI alliance of eight Chinese institutions on 11 October. It plans to link about 1,000 researchers and build AI models made for mathematical research. Yau said Chinese models are far behind OpenAI's recent maths work, the South China Morning Post reported.

Why it mattersSome Western mathematicians are urging colleagues to stop working with OpenAI. A leading Chinese mathematician has chosen the opposite course and wants to catch up.
