An AI copyright service filed a Minecraft claim against a free game engine, and Google pulled it from the Play Store

Luanti — the open-source voxel game engine formerly called Minetest — was removed from Google Play after Tracer.AI filed a DMCA notice on behalf of Microsoft, alleging the app uses copyrighted assets from Minecraft. According to Luanti's account of the notice, it cited a US copyright registration for Minecraft Java Edition 1.9 and named no specific infringing asset. The project says the app contains no proprietary code or assets from Minecraft or anything else, and that it has filed a counter-notice. The same company filed an identical claim against Luanti in 2023; Google took 46 days to restore the app, against the 10 to 14 business days the DMCA specifies. Luanti says Tracer.AI also filed a similar notice this year against an independent voxel-styled game called Allumeria. The engine remains available on F-Droid and as a direct download.

Why it mattersAutomated copyright detection is now cheap enough to file at scale and not accurate enough to be right, and the takedown system was never designed for that combination. The asymmetry does the damage: filing a notice costs a machine seconds, while a volunteer project has to write a counter-notice and then wait however long the platform decides to take — with the app gone the whole time. Nothing here required a court, or a human reading the two games side by side. If you build anything in a genre a large company owns a famous example of, this is now a background risk of shipping on a mainstream app store.
