The Clay Institute says a $1m maths problem is apparently settled.
The Clay Mathematics Institute said on 11 September that the Navier-Stokes problem has apparently been settled. It named nobody, because OpenAI and two mathematicians are still arguing over who deserves the credit. The institute will only pay the $1 million prize after peer review, and it is in no hurry.
Why it mattersThis is the first time a Millennium Prize problem has fallen with AI doing the work. Who gets named on such proofs will decide how science credits machines from now on.
