ChatGPT is signing its fake cartoons with real cartoonists' names.

ChatGPT is signing its fake cartoons with real cartoonists' names.

Nieman Lab reported on Monday that ChatGPT's image tool adds real signatures to fake New Yorker cartoons. Reporters found more than 15 cartoonists signed this way, including one whose pen name reads BLOPER. The 2024 licensing deal with the magazine's publisher never covered cartoons, and no artist was paid.

Why it mattersA signature is how an artist proves a drawing is theirs, and buyers pay for that proof. If a chatbot forges it on request, the proof stops working for everyone.
