OpenAI dropped its sponsorship of a Caltech maths hackathon for undergraduates on 10 September. The open letter called the event research misconduct and asked the organisers to cancel it. The 40-hour contest still runs on 30 October, and Anthropic and Y Combinator remain sponsors.
Why it mattersThe people who check machine proofs are refusing to stand next to the machines. If reviewers walk away, nobody independent is left to confirm what the models claim.
