The UN's university opens a global AI competition — and this year the theme is education
The UNU Global AI Network is taking entries for the AI for SDGs Global Youth AI Future Innovation Competition 2026 until 15 September. It is open to any individual, team or company anywhere, regardless of nationality; projects need to be at roughly working-prototype maturity (Technology Readiness Level 6 or above), and companies that enter must be under ten years old. This year's theme is 'AI and Education', with three tracks: AI for education, AI for social innovation, and AI for less developed countries. There are no fees to register, train or take part. The final is in Macau on 26 November, with hotel costs covered for finalists and travel support of up to $1,000 per team; the working language is English.
Why it mattersMost AI funding and fellowship programmes are, in practice, closed to people outside a handful of countries and institutions — you need an affiliation, a visa story or a professor's letter. This one takes applications from anywhere, costs nothing to enter, and asks for something built rather than something written. If you teach, study or are building anything in education technology, it is a rare open door with a real date attached.
