A university lab got a 550-billion-parameter model onto a laptop.
Tim Dettmers' lab at Carnegie Mellon released two open-source frameworks and four papers on Monday. The lab says DeepSeek V4.1, a 550-billion-parameter model, now runs on a MacBook with 128 gigabytes. It also claims its research agent beats the deep-research systems built by frontier labs.
