New Jersey fined an AI data centre over 62 unpermitted generators.

The state environment department fined the developer DataOne more than $1 million on Wednesday. Each of the 62 gas generators is rated at 1,982 kilowatts, far above the level that needs a permit. DataOne calls them temporary, rejects the order, and may keep them running while it applies.

Why it mattersAI sites are going up faster than the power and air rules around them can move. This one feeds a $17 billion Microsoft deal, so the pressure to plug in early is real.
