China's consumer association has told people not to act on what an AI says about a price, a contract or their legal rights
The China Consumer Association issued a formal consumer alert on generative AI on 25 August. As large language models spread into shopping, lending, after-sales support and complaint handling, it says, the uncertainty built into how they produce text is causing concrete losses: fee and rate figures that do not match reality, compensation promises the seller cannot honour, and one-sided or careless legal advice. Its instruction is blunt — on prices, contract terms, after-sales service and legal liability, do not decide on AI output alone; confirm through the merchant's official channels, the contract text, the regulator or another authoritative source. Nine days earlier the same body reported that complaints about AI customer service had risen sharply, including systems that make it hard to reach a human.
