DeepSeek ordered enough Huawei chips to fill a gigawatt data center.
DeepSeek plans to install at least 160,000 Huawei Ascend 950DT chips in Ulanqab, Inner Mongolia, Bloomberg reported. The site would reach one gigawatt at full build and will serve models rather than train them. DeepSeek still trains on Nvidia hardware, and Huawei may need over a year to deliver.
Why it mattersChina cannot buy Nvidia's best chips, so its labs are testing whether domestic silicon can serve users. If it works, running Chinese models stops depending on American export rules.
