Stanford edited a student out of its own welcome banner with AI.
Stanford's housing and dining office used AI to alter a photo taken at a student party in 2024. The edit changed one student's race and gender, and made two others look thinner. Stanford called it a clear policy breach, took the banners down and ordered staff training.
Why it mattersUniversities are writing AI rules faster than they teach their own staff to follow them. Photo edits are now cheap enough that any office can make them without a designer.
