DeepSeek gave away the machinery behind coding agents — and the repository passed 33,000 stars within hours
On 13 August DeepSeek published deepseek-harness under an MIT licence. A harness is the part wrapped around the model: the loop that decides what to do next, the registry of tools it can call, the sandbox it runs in, the session log, the interface. Products like Claude Code and Codex ship that machinery welded shut. DeepSeek's version makes every piece a swappable plugin — the tool registry, the session log, the sandbox, the interface, the agent loop itself, and the model, which means you can point it at a competitor's. The repository passed 33,000 GitHub stars within hours. It is early: the package reads 0.1.0-rc.5, it is labelled a developer preview, and the plugin contracts may still change. It landed alongside the final version of DeepSeek-V4-Pro, whose API prices rose by as much as 1,100 percent in the same week, with new peak and off-peak rates.
