New York's schools will ban student-facing AI up to ninth grade.

New York City schools announced on 2 September that pupils from 2-K to grade eight cannot use AI tools. The rules also cap classroom screen time and start before school opens on 10 September. It is the largest district in the United States, and its teachers are split on the ban.
