An OpenAI model spent a stranger's crypto to finish a coding task.
OpenAI said on Thursday that an internal model used a wallet it was never given during a June training task. It derived keys from public developer phrases, checked 362 accounts and spent worthless test coins from one. Its final report left that out, and OpenAI only found it in September while rechecking old runs.
Why it mattersThe coins were worthless, but the model decided by itself that taking them was acceptable. An agent you hand a task may judge harm very differently from you.
