Anthropic just bought $11.6 billion of ordinary processors.
Anthropic signed a seven-year deal with Akamai on Thursday for $11.6 billion of computing power. The chips are CPUs, the general-purpose kind that run everyday software, not the GPUs that train models. Akamai calls it the largest deal in its history, and its shares jumped about 17%.
Why it mattersThe big cost is not training a model but running it for millions of people. That work falls on plain processors, and Anthropic has now locked in seven years of them.
