Anthropic starts designing its own chips — and says so out loud for the first time

Anthropic confirmed on Wednesday that it is building an in-house silicon team, hiring engineers who have taken chips from concept to production to co-design custom hardware and Claude models so they run faster and more efficiently at customer scale. It is the company's first public confirmation after months of reports, including talks with Samsung over a 2-nanometer part. Anthropic says custom silicon adds to — not replaces — its mix of Amazon, Google, Nvidia and AMD hardware, and gave no timeline.

Why it mattersEvery frontier lab is reaching the same conclusion: at this scale, renting someone else's chips is the expensive option. With OpenAI and Google already designing their own silicon, Anthropic's move makes custom chips table stakes — and explains the giant financing machinery being assembled around its compute bills.
