Utah let an AI write a first prescription with no doctor signing off.

Utah regulators cleared a New York startup, Nolla Health, to issue first-time acne prescriptions by AI. The app reads a five-angle face scan and picks from a short list of approved creams. Doctors approve every script for the first 100 patients, then only review samples afterwards.

Why it mattersUntil now AI prescribing meant renewals; this is the first time software starts the treatment. Acne creams are low risk, but the pilot sets the template regulators will copy elsewhere.
