DeepSeek open-sourced its answer to Claude Code today — 26,000 stars in three hours

The deepseek-harness repository went public at 11:56 GMT and had passed 26,000 stars and 1,900 forks about three hours later. Version 0.1 is a developer preview under an MIT licence, built on a plugin framework called Cordis in which the model, the tools, the skills, the sandbox, the file system, the agent loop and even the interface are replaceable plugins rather than fixed parts. Every run is written to an append-only session log that can be replayed step by step.

Why it mattersThe expensive part of a coding agent is no longer the model — DeepSeek already sells inference at a fraction of Western prices — it is the harness around it, which Anthropic and OpenAI ship inside a subscription. Giving that away under an MIT licence lets anyone rebuild the same workflow on top of any model, including one running on their own machine. It also means the agent scores DeepSeek posted this week now arrive with the tooling needed to use them.
