Anthropic has rented 460 megawatts in West Virginia for six years. The bill is around $45 billion, and the power does not switch on until late 2027.

Anthropic has agreed a cloud deal worth roughly $45 billion with Nscale, a UK AI-infrastructure company founded only in 2024, according to reporting by Bloomberg, CNBC and TechCrunch on 26 August. Under the agreement Anthropic rents around 460 megawatts of capacity at Nscale's flagship data centre development in West Virginia, over a term of about six years, running on Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems. The capacity is expected to start serving Claude in late 2027 — more than a year from the signing. Nscale is a young company by any measure: founded two years ago, it has already signed with Microsoft, and is reported to be heading toward a London listing. Anthropic is likewise reported to be preparing for public markets. The deal extends a run of infrastructure agreements Anthropic has struck this year with AMD, SpaceX, Google and Broadcom, after the company said publicly that demand for Claude had put 'inevitable strain' on its infrastructure.

Why it mattersThe number worth holding is not the $45 billion, it is the date. Committing that much money for power that will not carry a single query until late 2027 is a forecast, not a purchase — a bet that demand two years out justifies signing today, made at a moment when nobody in the industry can credibly model demand two years out. Everyone in this trade is making the same bet, which is what makes it worth watching rather than admiring. The 460 megawatts is worth translating too: that is continuous draw on the order of several hundred thousand homes, landing in one American state, for one company's models. And the counterparty says something about the shape of the market. Nscale did not exist three years ago and is now signing multi-decade-scale commitments with Microsoft and Anthropic. The layer underneath AI is being built at speed by firms with no track record through a full cycle, funded against contracts from companies that are themselves not yet public.
