The week in AI: the money changed shape, and the capability got cheaper
Five things happened this week. One: Nvidia put $105 billion behind a single OpenAI data centre in Ohio, and by Saturday was telling customers that servers with its chips cost 15 percent more from 2027 — because memory makers now have leverage over it. Two: Anthropic's quarterly revenue was reported at more than $11.5 billion, up from $787 million a year earlier, as it prepares what could be the largest listing in history. Three: a Chinese humanoid robot maker opened at seven times its offer price, then closed 460 percent up, and its founder said the breakthrough might be overrated. Four: OpenAI shipped a separate ChatGPT for 13-to-17-year-olds that guesses your age, while a 30-month study of 26,811 pupils found homework marks up 18 percent and exam results down 20. Five: the capability layer kept going free — Gemma passed a billion downloads, OpenAI open-sourced the engine under Codex, and DeepSeek's giveaway of its agent scaffolding passed 165,000 stars in under a week.
Why it mattersThe through-line is that the two halves of this industry are moving in opposite directions. The money is getting heavier and stranger — vendor credit, debt vehicles, IPO plans, a chip company financing its own customers — while the thing the money buys keeps getting cheaper and more open. That is a widening gap, and a week that ended with an audit finding that no frontier lab scored above 3 out of 5 on containing a runaway model is a reminder that governance is tracking neither half fast enough.
