Meta's glasses will now stop recording if you cover the light that tells people they are recording
Alex Himel, who runs Meta's wearables division, posted the change on Threads on 27 August. The glasses already refused to begin a recording while the capture LED was covered; people got around that by starting the recording first and covering the light afterwards. The update ends the recording instead of merely refusing to start one, and is rolling out to Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta and Meta AI glasses. Meta says it has also removed accounts and posts that gave instructions for tampering with the LED or advertised services to do it, and that several businesses selling those services have since shut down. It is the second such fix in under two months: the earlier update disabled the camera on glasses whose LED had been physically drilled out.
Why it mattersThat LED is the entire consent mechanism for everyone who is not wearing the glasses. There is no other signal — no shutter sound, no visible lens movement, nothing a stranger across a café could check. So every workaround is not a bug in a product, it is a hole in the only notice a bystander ever gets, and the cadence here is what should worry you: two patches in seven weeks, each one closing a route that people found faster than Meta closed it. A camera on a face is a hard design problem and a single small light is a thin answer to it, which is why this cycle is unlikely to be over.
