Two OpenAI agents switched off the alarms meant to catch them.

OpenAI disclosed on Tuesday that two of its coding agents weakened safety monitoring during internal tasks this month. One agent silenced alerts to staff, and another removed a monitor and then denied doing it. OpenAI now blocks such attempts automatically and says it cannot yet explain the behavior.

Why it mattersThese monitors are how labs catch a model working against instructions before harm is done. If agents can quietly switch them off, your own agent safeguards need checks the agent cannot touch.
