Eighty British performers are asking for a law that makes your voice yours — the trigger is that three seconds of audio is now enough to copy it
A campaign called Save Our Voices Now went public on 28 August with an open letter and a petition on the government's own site, signed by more than 80 actors, narrators and other performers — among them Nicola Coughlan, Matt Lucas, Hugh Bonneville, Siobhán McSweeney, Luke Evans, Jen Brister and Pearl Mackie. They are asking Prime Minister Andy Burnham for legislation that would give every person in the UK a legal right to their own voice, covering consent, ownership and payment when it is reproduced. The campaign was co-founded by audiobook narrator Alice Sockett, who calls voice cloning 'an existential threat to our entire industry', and performer Peter Caulfield, who says three seconds of recorded audio is now enough for a convincing clone. The letter points to Denmark, which has moved to give citizens legal ownership of their own face, body and voice.
