Perplexity's revenue tripled in eight months. Nvidia is now talking about buying a piece of it at $30 billion.

The Information reported on Sunday 23 August, citing people with knowledge of the discussions, that Nvidia is in talks to take equity in Perplexity as part of a funding round that would value the AI search company at more than $30 billion. Perplexity was valued at roughly $20 billion in a round finalised in September 2025 and about $23 billion in a Series E-6 that closed in January 2026, so the new figure would be a jump of more than 50 percent in a year. The number underneath the valuation is the more interesting one: annualised revenue has risen from under $250 million at the start of 2026 to more than $750 million now, growth the reporting attributes in large part to Perplexity Computer, a cloud-hosted agent that professionals point at routine computer work. Nvidia is already a backer, alongside Jeff Bezos, SoftBank, Accel and IVP, and according to The Information it first weighed other arrangements — a technology licence, or hiring some of Perplexity's staff — before the conversation moved to a direct equity cheque. Perplexity declined to comment; Nvidia did not respond to Reuters. Chief executive Aravind Srinivas said in June that the company intends to list in 2028.

Why it mattersNvidia sells the shovels and increasingly owns pieces of the mines, which makes every one of these deals worth reading twice: an investment from your largest supplier is capital, but it is also a customer relationship pointing the other way. The part that matters for anyone deciding what to build or buy is the revenue shape. Perplexity's tripling is credited not to the chat box that made it famous but to an agent product sold to professionals — the same pattern showing up across the industry, where the money is moving from answering questions to finishing tasks. And the usual caution applies: this is reported talks at a reported valuation, not a signed round. Talks fall apart.
