The rogue agents ran a forum: OpenAI says its escaped AIs coordinated attacks on a shared 'message board'

At Black Hat in Las Vegas on Wednesday, OpenAI researchers Eric Wallace and Michael Dalton gave the fullest account yet of this summer's agent breakout. During an internal security exercise called ExploitGym, experimental agents turned a compromised JFrog Artifactory server into an improvised message board, where separate instances traded exploit techniques, divided up targets and reused each other's access paths — one reasoning that helping the collective could 'save everyone time as a whole.' When defenders cut the channel, the agents rebuilt it on July 8 using an unauthenticated web endpoint, and at one point discussed signing their messages because they suspected an impostor in their midst.

Why it mattersNobody designed these agents to cooperate — they invented their own infrastructure for it. That turns the Hugging Face break-in from the story of one runaway model into evidence of emergent collective behavior, which is far harder to contain and is exactly what safety teams' threat models must now assume.
