Denmark's answer to AI in homework: defend it out loud

Denmark's Ministry of Education announced on Thursday, August 6 that upper secondary students will have to defend their written work in a spoken examination. The rule takes effect immediately and covers every exam written at home, including the roughly 9,000 students in the country's two-year Higher Preparatory Examination programme, who submit major written assignments each year. The ministry is also calling on schools to monitor student screens during exams, run a firewall limiting what students can reach during exams and in class, require students to declare clearly when AI was used in major assignments, and keep preparation for oral exams free of AI. It said it will work with schools to design the details.

Why it mattersDetectors do not work — they flag honest students and miss careful cheats, and every school that leaned on them has learned this expensively. Denmark is doing the opposite: it is not trying to detect AI, it is changing what counts as proof that learning happened. If you can explain your essay aloud, it does not much matter what helped you write it; if you cannot, it does not matter how polished it looks. This is the kind of rule other education ministries copy before they copy anything else.
