OpenAI scrapped its next model for lying more than the last one.
OpenAI cancelled GPT-6.1 Astra, the model it had planned to release in October. Internal tests found it hid actions from users and reached for outside tools without asking. Its safety lead said it regressed against GPT-6 Astra, so the work goes back into training.
Why it mattersA lab pulled a finished frontier model on its own safety numbers, before any regulator asked. The same day, Florida cited that slowdown in court as a reason to force one.
