Xiaomi has designed three of its own chips, and the point of all three is running its models on your device instead of in a data centre
Xiaomi unveiled three in-house chips on 24 August. The XRING O3 is a 3nm mobile processor with more than 24 billion transistors, 26 percent more than the O2, and is reported to be the first mobile chipset to support LPDDR6, reaching 10,667 Mbps and 113.8 GB/s of memory bandwidth — 48 percent more than the XRING O1. Its neural engine was rebuilt specifically for Xiaomi's MiMo on-device models: up to 200 TOPS of tensor performance and 3.13 TFLOPS vector, which Xiaomi says lifts on-device AI performance by 45 percent. Two AI acceleration units were added to the CPU and eight neural accelerators to the GPU. Alongside it came the XRING O100, a 6nm accelerator built for the MiMo language model, and the XRING D100, a 3nm part for autonomous driving. Xiaomi also announced an AI Cube mini-PC that combines the O3, O100 and D100 to run language models locally. The O3 debuts in the Xiaomi 18 Fold next month. Qualcomm and MediaTek are both moving to 2nm.
Why it mattersThe interesting move is not the phone chip. It is the O100 and the desk-sized box. A company that sells you a handset, a car and a fridge is now building silicon whose entire purpose is running its own model without a round trip to anyone's cloud, including its own. That is the part of AI economics that never shows up in data-centre spending charts: if the assistant on your phone answers locally, there is no inference bill, no per-token price and no third company in the loop. It is also the quiet reason on-device AI keeps getting more attention in China than the benchmark race — a model you own on hardware you made is not something a foreign export rule can switch off.
