Debian is voting on whether AI-written code may enter the base half the internet runs on — eight options, two weeks

Debian developers began a ranked-choice vote at 00:00 UTC on 15 August on how the project should treat contributions made with large language models. The ballot carries eight substantive options plus "none of the above": a full ban written into the Social Contract; allowing AI-assisted work if it is legal, licensed, disclosed and accountable; disallowing AI output as direct contributions while leaving upstream projects alone; and simply applying existing quality standards regardless of tooling. One option argues against LLM use on environmental grounds. Voting closes at 23:59 UTC on 28 August. The stated concerns are the copyright status of model output, quality and accuracy degradation, reviewer burnout from AI-generated submissions, and models trained on web content without licence compliance.

Why it mattersDebian sits underneath Ubuntu and a large share of the world's servers, so whatever it settles on travels far past its own developer list. It is also the first major volunteer distribution to put the question to a formal, binding vote instead of issuing guidance. Because the ballot is preferential, the result will show not only what Debian decided but how split it was — and that margin is what other projects will read.
