Seattle told grocers they can no longer read you to set a price.
Seattle's city council voted 7-2 to stop large grocers from using shopper data to set prices. Banned inputs include race, gender, employment status, browsing history and past chatbot conversations. It is the first such city ban in the country and now goes to Mayor Katie Wilson.
Why it mattersIf this spreads, the price you see stops depending on what a shop knows about you. Consumer Reports estimates such pricing could cost a Seattle family $1,200 a year.
