A Chinese open model with 35 billion parameters runs on an iPhone.
Chinese start-up ModelBest released MiniCPM-V 4.7 this week, an open model that reads images, video and documents. Its makers say the larger version runs on an iPhone 17 Pro Max in just 3 GB of memory. It comes in two sizes, both free to download and to use commercially.
Why it mattersThe trick is loading only the parts of the model each word needs, not the whole thing at once. Photos and documents could then be analysed on your phone without going online.
