ICE asked companies for AI that listens to detainees' phone calls.

US immigration agency ICE asked companies on 9 October for AI that would monitor its detention centres around the clock. Voice recognition would check who detainees talk to, and cameras would flag fights, falls and self-harm. It is only a request for information so far, and companies have until 26 October to reply.

Why it mattersAdvocates warn that a voice-matching error could sit unnoticed in a person's case file. Prisons already use similar call-scanning tools, and this would bring them into immigration detention.
