Changing one word now moves AI code from Nvidia chips to Google's.

Changing one word now moves AI code from Nvidia chips to Google's.

Google and Meta open-sourced TorchTPU on Tuesday, a PyTorch backend for Google's AI chips. Existing code moves over by swapping the device name from cuda to tpu. Meta already runs ads and language model work on it, and Amazon released a similar tool.

Why it mattersNvidia's lead rests partly on software that only its own chips run well. Cheaper chips become real options for the services you use when code ports this easily.
