A Fields medallist opened an institute to do the maths of AI safety.
Jacob Tsimerman, who won the Fields Medal this year, launched the Mathematical AI Safety Institute on Tuesday. It wants 10 to 30 mathematicians in the Bay Area for a first term in January. Tsimerman is joining OpenAI's safety team at the same time.
Why it mattersNobody can yet define, in maths, what a safe AI system would even mean. Rules written without that definition are guesses, however confident they sound.
