One engineer was burning $50,000 a month on AI. Rippling built a tool to find him.

The HR software company Rippling was on course to spend 40% of its entire engineering headcount budget on AI tokens, with the bill growing 80% month over month in early 2026 across Cursor, OpenAI and Anthropic. An internal review found that 10-15% of employees drove 60% of the spending, and that one engineer alone was running up $50,000 a month. Rippling built AI Spend Console, which tracks cost per person and per team, sets it against output such as pull requests and code reviews, and routes prompts to cheaper models through an internal gateway. Token spend fell from 40% of the headcount budget to 15%: July cost 37% of what April cost on roughly the same volume, about 600 billion tokens. Rippling is now selling the tool to other companies.

Why it mattersCompanies have spent two years being told AI would cut costs, with no way to see where the money actually goes. Rippling's numbers give the problem a shape: usage is wildly concentrated in a few people, and most of the bill can be removed without reducing how much work gets done. The uncomfortable half of the tool is the other one — it also flags which employees produce results and which produce what Rippling calls AI slop. A metric like that will not stay inside the engineering department.
